Sweepings
Are you up for a challenge?
Wow. It's May, and how will we decide what to do and where to
go this summer? The list of events is wonderful, even though
slightly overwhelming. We have been talking and making lists
and trying to determine how we can be everywhere at once. It
can't be done, so we're counting on you, our readers, to do it
with us. Send us photos; send us names of people and horses and
events. Help us get the scoop on all the great things that are
going on in Atlantic Canada this year. We all know that travel
is becoming more costly and sometimes there just aren't enough
hours in the weekend, let alone the day. We would like everyone
to go out armed with a camera to record their favorite events
on film (or flash card) and send the photos on to us. Between
our pages and our website, we want to help everyone who, like
us, wants it all, by having at least one picture from every event
all season. Now that's a challenge. Are we up for it? Send your
photos to dvlproduction@eastlink.ca, or phone 1-877-354-3764
for more information. Ask for Angie Fredericks.
We have a great magazine this month. It's full of information
from what to put in a horse's mouth (From the Feed Bin, page
22), to how the teeth handle it (A Vet's View, page 18), to what
to do with what comes out the other end. Or what not to do with
it (see Ceci Flanagan-Snow's article on riding rings on page
38).
And this issue is our focus on show jumping. We are pleased
to have stories from Jodi DeLong, Nicole Kitchener, and Judith
Scrimger that bring together for us the wisdom of Deanna Phalen,
Lori LeBlanc, Kevin Crosby, and Ian Millar; to drop just a few
names.
But there are also the less happy things to talk about this
issue. Lily Sampson is retiring from writing our Nova Scotia
report after working with us for around eight years. Lily has
been fun for us to work with, and by all accounts fun for you
to work with as well. We are sad to see her go, but she'll keep
in touch with her camera if not her pen. For now, please send
your Nova Scotia information to Kim here at our office. Her address
is on page 48 at the end of the Nova Scotia Report. If any of
you readers are itching to be a roving correspondent, please
contact Kim. (Like buying a saddle, you can't be sure of the
fit until you try it out.)
Our focus next issue will be penning. We need photos, so keep
your camera handy. See our ad on page 21 for information on what
we need and how to send it.
The horse industry in Atlantic Canada is strong, and growing
stronger by the month. Look at the new crop of foals on pages
32 and 33. Those little guys are going to be showing up again
and again on our pages over the next few years as they take their
place in the show ring and on the trails. Look at the young riders
throughout this magazine. Remember their names. They will also
be showing up again and again as they mature and take their place
in the winners' circles around the region.
What a great life. Have fun, enjoy the horses, and don't forget
to write!
'Til next issue. AG
