LP Announces the Sale of Timberlands May 10 -- LP, formerly known as Louisiana-Pacific, announced that it will sell several businesses and shed 4,400 jobs as part of a restructuring effort. The Portland, Oregon-based maker of lumber, pulp, and building products said it would divest its 935,000 acres of timberland in three states--Idaho, Louisiana, and Texas--along with its plywood, industrial panels, and lumber businesses. LP said it wants to focus on its more profitable businesses and expects the sale to net the company more than $600 million. The restructuring would cut LP's work force to 5,300 from 9,700, and reduce its number of North American mills from 60 to about 35. President Bush Signs Farm Bill May 6 -- President Bush signed the Farm Bill into law on May 6. Also known as the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002, the Farm Bill contains strong Forestry and Conservation Titles that will assist private forest landowners in taking greater strides in sustainable forestry. The Forest Landowner Enhancement Program and the Environmental Quality Incentive Program will help landowners protect riparian areas, enhance wildlife habitat, and assist with management plan development. SAF Sends Letter to President Bush Regarding Forest Management May 13 -- In conjunction with the National Association of Professional Forestry Schools and Colleges (NAPFSC ) and the National Association of State Foresters (NASF), SAF sent a letter to President Bush in response to a letter sent by a group scientists that questioned the prudence of logging on the national forests. SAF, NAPFSC, and NASF promote active management to maintain the health and productivity of the national forests while protecting valuable resources. SAF hopes this letter will improve the dialogue surrounding national forest management inject a scientific viewpoint into the discussion. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) announced she has drafted a bill to designate 2.5 million acres of public land in California as "wilderness" and segments of California rivers as "wild and scenic." "The "California Wild Heritage Wilderness Act of 2002" would ban logging, construction, and motorized vehicles in 77 new areas of the state. Biodiversity in Forest Planning and Management Symposium May 13 -- "Biodiversity in Forest Planning and Management" a symposium to be held June 20, 2002, in Portland Oregon, will be the first annual symposium of the National Commission on Science for Sustainable Forestry (NCSSF). The meeting aims to identify, characterize, and prioritize gaps in our understanding of biodiversity in forest planning and management to help NCSSF develop a research agenda. Council, Vice-Presidential Nominations Being Accepted Nominations are open for four seats on the SAF Council, the Society's governing body. The following four voting districts will be electing new representatives: District I - Alaska, Inland Empire, and
Washington State Representatives are elected for three-year terms beginning January 2003. In addition, a vice-president will be elected to hold that office one year, then serve one year as president, and one year on the Council as immediate past president.
