HORSE & PONY SURVEY

Atlantic Beef, L. Spring 2009

BREED NOTES

The new executive of the Maritime Angus Association is as follows: President, Tim Dixon, P.E.I.; Vice President, Wilfred Gilby, N.S.; and Secretary/Treasurer, Betty Lou Scott, N.S. The Director positions from all provinces are unchanged from 2008. Dates to remember include a Directors meeting at 10 am in Nappan on April 4. Also, the Maritime Field Day and Junior Show will be held at Kurt and Jenn Duncan's farm in Cornwall, P.E.I., on June 5-6. Plans for Maritime participation in the World Angus Forum "marketplace" were discussed and breeders will hear from Betty Lou Scott soon as to their role in the slide show being organized.

There was great weather, attendance, and cattle at the M.C. Quantock "Canada's Bulls" bull sale held in Lloydminster, Sask., on Jan. 31. Three hundred and fifty-two bulls sold for an average of $2,910. John Blacklock was the auctioneer for the day and cattle sold to all Western provinces, Ontario, and Nova Scotia. For more specific results, visit www.mcquantock.com.

The annual Annapolis Valley Exhibition in Lawrencetown, N.S., was held August 11-16, 2008, and writer Lori Power was there to report on the beef show, which included Limousin, Hereford, and Simmental breeds. As the result of missed communication, a story and photos prepared by her did not appear in our fall issue. Atlantic Beef regrets the omission. The story in full and photos can be found by following the Valley Ex Beef Show link at www.AtlanticFarmer.com.

Simmental producers should be aware that when purchasing American bulls or semen from American bulls, differences exist between Canada and the U.S. in the percentage of Simmental required to qualify for purebred status. The Canadian Simmental Association requires a male to be 15/16 Simmental to reach purebred status while the American Simmental Association accepts males who are 7/8 Simmental as purebred. It is your responsibility to ensure these bulls meet the requirement of being 15/16 Simmental if you wish to register that animal in the Canadian Simmental herd book as a purebred.

The Canadian National Junior Shorthorn show will be held in West Brome, Québec, July 24-26 this year and the theme is "Shorthorns Shine in 2009!" For more information, phone Kevin Dempsey, 450-263-3090; Belinda Wagner, 306-757-6133; or Dennis Cox, 819-837-2086.

On Feb. 17, Willabar Ranch of Claresholm, Alta., held its 10th annual Long Yearling Black Angus bull sale. The long yearling Black Angus bulls sold for an average of $3,609 while the Fall-bred Angus heifers averaged $1,950. The gross total for all animals sold was $181,000.

Mark Aug. 1-2 on your calendar for the 2009 Canadian Simmental Association AGM in Sun Peaks, B.C. Follow the CSA link at www.AtlanticFarmer.com for more details on this meeting and other events planned by the association.
