The Maritime Limousin Association (MLA) held its annual meeting and field day June 14 at Lindencrest Farm in Scotch Village, N.S. The new executive is as follows: President, Mike Horsnell; Vice President, Heather King; Secretary-Treasurer, Sandra Othberg; and Past President, Manfred Zillig. After the annual meeting, Limousin breeders toured Lindencrest Farms, and enjoyed a delicious roast beef dinner.
Thanks to Manfred Zillig and Lois Brown for hosting the event and their generous donation of the beef for the supper. It was a great day!

Just a reminder to Gelbvieh breeders in Alberta and B.C. that it is time to create their Gelbvieh Wish List and make plans to attend the second annual Gelbvieh Wish List Weekend on Dec. 5-6, in the Olds Cow Palace at Olds, Alta. The two-day extravaganza features Gelbvieh cattle and events that will appeal to commercial and seed stock producers. Gelbvieh cattle were originally imported into Canada in 1972 from Germany. Today it is Canada's sixth largest beef breed with more than 2,970 head registered in 2006. For information contact Rodney Hollman at 403-588-8620.

A Shorthorn show was held Aug. 22 at the N.S. Provincial Exhibition grounds, in Truro, with six exhibitors and 19 cattle on hand. Grand Champion Male went to Randy Angevine of Pinevale, N.S., with reserve going to Nathan Greeno from Amherst, N.S. Grand Champion Female was won by Gordon Fraser of Millbrook, N.S., and Nathan Greeno took reserve. Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor was also won by Nathan Greeno.

Sussex show success

There were also five PeeWee exhibitors. Spectators from Sackville and Barnsville, N.B., came to watch.
Thanks to Mark Trueman of Amherst, N.S., for being the judge, Brian McDonald and Guy LeBlanc for keeping everything running smoothly, and Duncan Fraser for being the ringmaster. Last, but not least, thanks to all the businesses in the Sussex area for sponsoring the show.

Field fun day
The Maritime Angus Junior Show and Field Day was held July 4-5 in Florenceville and Gordonville, New Brunswick. A reception and registration was held the first day in Florenceville and included Angus breeders from the Maritimes, Ontario, and Saskatchewan.
Greetings and comments came from Bob Sweitzer of Aneroid, Sask., incoming president of the Canadian Angus Association (CAA); Darren Moffitt, Harvey, N.B., 2008 Maritime Angus president; Cathy Morris, Kierstead Mountain, N.B., 2008 N.B. Angus president; and Buddy Loane, Montaque, P.E.I., current Maritime director to the CAA Board of Directors. There was also a presentation of the Maritime Honorary President pin to Bill Pryor.
A fun auction was held to raise money for the N.B. Angus Association to aid in its hosting of the 2008 field day events. Jim Colodey of Cornwall, P.E.I., incoming Maritime director to the Canadian Angus Board of Directors, was auctioneer.
On Saturday, the Maritime Junior Angus Association and the Board of Directors of the Maritime Angus Association held meetings at Steer Creek Farm, home of Keith Bubar and family.
In the afternoon, there was a show of yearling Angus and Angus cross heifers by Junior members. This year there were 17 heifers entered in the show and 21 young people participated in the showmanship classes. Grand Champion Purebred Heifer was shown by Justin Ford of Wheatley River, P.E.I., with Reserve shown by Andrew Dixon of Cornwall, P.E.I. In total there were four heifers from Nova Scotia, seven from the Island, and five from New Brunswick. The Champion Crossbred Heifer was shown by Ashley Black and Reserve went to Ben Alward, both of New Brunswick.
The Champion Senior Showman was Andrew Dixon and the Champion Junior Showman was Logan Ford, both from the Island. In the PeeWee class of six-year-olds, the judge deemed the two entrants of equal merit and Zion Moffit of New Brunswick and Dakota Nelson of Nova Scotia were awarded medallions for a tie placing. Following the show there was a semen auction of semen donated by Angus breeders from all across Canada. All monies raised from this auction will be divided equally among all Junior participants.
Following the Junior activities, the 2008 Maritime Commercial Angus Breeder Award was presented to Dale Black and his wife Lisa and daughters Megan and Ashley of Bloomfield, N.B. They received the Co-op Atlantic Tender Beef Classic Perpetual Trophy, the Farm Focus keeper plaque, and monogrammed jackets from the Maritime Angus Association.
It was a very successful weekend and the hosts provided an excellent site for the event. They even went the extra mile of providing the meat for both the lunch and supper meal. In addition, they gave each participating Junior a monogrammed camp chair as a keepsake of their participation in the 2008 show.
